In cross-editing, the camera will cut away from one action to another action, which can suggest the simultaneity of these two actions. It speeds up the narrative pace and the suspense and is able to link actions occuring at different places and times. Here you see a scene from the film M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder (Director Fritz Lang, 1931), a classic example for cross-editing. We see two meetings, one in a police office, one in a gangster’s headquarter. Both parties want to catch a child killer.
