Hat
The film version differs from the book. In the book, the hat is black with a dark feather. For the film, the creators opted for a more colorful costume that makes greater use of contrasts and complementary colors and blends harmoniously into the magical world of the film. Instead of black, the felt hat is a washed-out blue, and the feather is light in color.
Shirt and vest
The red vest with the green stripe is also a creation for the film and does not appear in this form in Franz Josef Tripp’s book illustrations. Unfortunately, the original shirt from the film has not been preserved. The one on display here is a replica. The original shirt also had several large patches on the sleeves.
Belt
In both the book and the movie, the robber uses a belt to carry his seven knives, his old-fashioned pistol, and a telescope. The worn-out belt, which he has painted himself, hangs loosely over the character’s large belly, emphasizing his ragged appearance. Particularly striking is the oversized, tarnished belt buckle.
Pants
The robber’s blue pants are dirty and frayed at the hems. The colorful patches, which have been hastily sewn on with coarse thread, are particularly striking. During filming, actor Gert Fröbe wore padding on his stomach and buttocks. The entire figure thus appears pear-shaped, creating a contrast between the dangerous robber and his rather sluggish and laid-back appearance.
