In the small town of Eschenbach, the dreaded bandit Hotzenplotz is up to no good. When he steals the grandmother’s beloved coffee grinder, her grandson Kasperl and his friend Seppel decide to catch the bandit on their own. In the process, they fall into the clutches of the evil wizard Petrosilius Zwackelmann, who holds Kasperl captive as a servant in his castle. With cunning and courage, the friends manage to outwit both the robber and the wizard.
The film was produced by director Gustav Ehmck in collaboration with ZDF. The story is based on the first book in Otfried Preußler’s The Robber Hotzenplotz series, the first part being published in 1962. The 1974 film adaptation is considered one of the best-known and most popular adaptations of the story and was followed in 1979 by „Neues vom Räuber Hotzenplotz“, again directed by Gustav Ehmck but starring Peter Kerl as the titular robber.
The story has been adapted for the screen several times in recent decades, including live-action adaptations in 2006 and 2022.
Gustav Ehmck
Gustav Ehmck, born on December 1, 1937, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, was a German director and screenwriter. Ehmck began as a photographer and worked as an actor. In the early 1960s, he directed several short films.
For his feature film debut, the drama „Spur eines Mädchens“ (Traces of a Girl, 1967), he won the Bundesfilmpreis for Best New Director. His leading actress, Thekla Carola Wied, received the Filmband in Gold for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
In the years that followed, Ehmck directed both dramas and comedies – often featuring erotic or taboo themes. In 1974, he released what is probably his best-known film, „Der Räuber Hotzenplotz“. He was able to cast Gert Fröbe, an actor renowned both nationally and internationally, in the lead role. This was followed by, among other things, another comedy film with Fröbe („Mein Onkel Theodor oder Wie man im Schlaf viel Geld verdient”, 1975) and a sequel to his Hotzenplotz film titled „Neues vom Räuber Hotzenplotz” (1979). Gustav Ehmck died on April 18, 2024, in Munich.
