Discover film lighting!

Touch one of the pictures on the left side and find out how exactly the film projector was illuminated. The following lighting styles are distinguished, based on black-and-white photography: Normal style, High key and Low key.

The normal style creates a balance between light and dark areas within the picture, the naturally available light is emphasised. The illumination is based on actual experience. This imitates our viewing habits to create an authentic atmosphere.

With high key, the entire scene is evenly or even excessively brightly lit to eliminate shadow areas. This lighting style conveys a rather positive mood, the images appear brighter.

With low key, the lighting is only set selectively, the shadowy areas of a scene are explicitly emphasised. Objects, people and scenes are thus only irregularly lit. The basic mood is rather gloomy and dramatic.
